Hi, I’m Paul Hanford, a music culture writer, author, broadcaster and university lecturer based in Berlin and welcome to the newsletter for Lost and Sound.
Lost and Sound is a podcast where each week I chat with an artist who operates well outside of the box, from legendary mavericks and trailblazing outsiders to emerging innovators and we talk about music, creativity and perhaps that most daunting part of being an artist - life.
I’ve set up this Substack to feature podcast updates but more importantly to toss out writing related sometimes loosely, sometimes directly to the podcast’s themes.
After five years of making the podcast, I’ve never stopped learning stuff from the people I talk to, so this Substack acts as a place where I can share writing - be it insights on creativity, op-eds on the state of music culture or narrative stuff about being a music person living in Berlin.
A little bit about me
My debut book, Coming To Berlin, explores the city’s electronic music scenes and came out last year through Velocity Press, receiving coverage with Mixmag and BBC 6Music amongst places. Here is a link to me talking about it on Lauren Laverne’s Breakfast Show last summer.
I’ve written about music culture for Huck, Canvas8, The Face, Resident Advisor, Wired, DJMag, Mixmag, Music Radar, Borschch, Beatportal, Boiler Room and Somesuch Stories. I teach music culture studies to students at the university BIMM Berlin and have hosted workshops around podcasting and radio for Apple, Refuge Worldwide and Open Music Lab.
